We continue our “Partner Profiles” by highlighting another organization that will be participating in the upcoming SocMM Free Workshop on November 5, 2011 (12:30-4:00pm).

The Bowie Boys and Girls Club (BBGC) have provided a place for children aged 5-18 to participate in athletics since 1963.   The club is a non-profit organization that provides children a proper introduction to sports, including soccer.

I can speak to this first hand.  My father signed me up with the BBGC when I was five years old.  When we signed up, he signed me up first for the sports he knew: baseball (summer) and basketball (winter).  He then turned to me and said: “We have to sign you up for something in the Fall and Spring…Do you want to try soccer?”

SocMM Community Update: Morgan Tabor

Disclaimer: Morgan is a SocMM alum who has participated in a SocMM Spring Session (Calvert, MD) and weekly individual sessions with Executive Director Nate Baker.

On October 22, 2011, the Calverton School (Huntingtown, MD) women’s soccer team won its fifth straight Maryland Independent School Athletic League (MISAL) title and finished with a 17-0-1 overall record.  The Cougars have won 51 straight league games dating back to 2007, but before the season, no one knew exactly how the Cougars would fair coming into this season.

Calverton lost its two leading scorers and Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention Selections (Beth Bunn and Caitlin Chase) to graduation, so coming into this season, the major question was how was Calverton going to produce the goals for the 2011 season without two of their senior leaders?

Sophomore Morgan Tabor and SocMM alum answered that question emphatically. Morgan led the entire DC Metro area in goals with 35 on the season earning her the honors of MISAL Player of the year and a spot on the Washington Post All-Met 1st team.

We asked Morgan a few questions about her breakout sophomore campaign and this is what she had to say.  Enjoy!

Partner Profile: Soccer Shots

We continue our “Partner Profiles” with an organization that excels in getting pre-school kids (ages 3-5) a great introduction to the beautiful game.  Although only 7-17 year olds can participate in the training on the field during the Workshop, we did not forget about the young ones!

“Soccer Shots” was founded in 2000 by two ex-college teammates Jeremy Sorzano and Jason Webb. At first, the purpose was to make a little extra money in the off-season while they played professionally.  Today, Soccer Shots introduces soccer to over 25,000 kids in their local preschools and daycares all over the country.

Soccer Shots provides a great curriculum that teaches the game in a fun and engaging way, while giving the kids a good 30 minutes of exercise every week.  The sessions are so good that as recently as 2010, Soccer Shots was named a Top 500 Franchise and ranked #9 among Child Fitness Programs by Entrepreneur Magazine.

Soccer Shots’ main office is just outside Harrisburg, PA, but they offer a number of classes throughout the DC Metro area.  Laura Kane, Soccer Shots Director of Company Owned Units, oversees numerous Soccer Shots franchises in the Maryland area and will represent them at our upcoming SocMM Free Workshop. Be sure to stop by her booth and see how you can get your young, aspiring player a proper introduction to the beautiful game.

Laura was kind enough to answer a few questions about Soccer Shots. Enjoy!

We will be raffling off a handful of items at the upcoming Fall Workshop that have been donated by vendors or friends of Soccer Means More.

We are excited to be raffling off an official Major League Soccer (MLS) game ball autographed by the entire Philadelphia Union 2011 team.   In their second year of existence, the Union locked up the franchise’s first ever playoff berth and will be competing for an MLS championship this November.

Some of the notable players on their team include USA National team players: Freddy Adu, Danny Califf, Brian Carroll and Justin Mapp.  Also, Union leading goal and assist leader Sebastien Le Toux will be featured on the ball along with the rest of his teammates.

In the latest installment of “Partner Profiles”, we profile the host of the SocMM Free Workshop: Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School (HTEDS).

HTEDS and SocMM just recently put pen-to-paper on a two-and-a-half year deal that will make them the home of Soccer Means More training for the foreseeable future. SocMM will get to use HTEDS’ beautiful Bermuda-grass field for all future training sessions including five more “Free Workshops” starting with the first on November 5, 2011.

Executive Director Nate Baker is a HTEDS alum and had this to say about the partnership and the school:

“I am proud and thrilled about our partnership with Holy Trinity moving forward.  As a proud alum, I can say that Holy Trinity challenged and pushed me academically for three years (grades 6-8) in a very friendly, personable and creative environment.  My schooling at Holy Trinity prepared me to have success in the future, and now again with the partnership, they are helping Soccer Means More in the same way.  SocMM is proud to have Holy Trinity as our partner and host for the upcoming fall workshop.”

Get to know HTEDS by reading the interview below.  Enjoy!
